Sacrament of Holy Baptism
     Young or infant children of active members of the congregation are invited to the font as well as adults and older children who have heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ and declare their faith. Those who wish to join the church through baptism are to call the church office (334-2012) to schedule a home visitation with a pastor and to provide pertinent information.


Pre-Marital Retreat
     This half-day retreat is offered twice a year for couples who are to be married by a pastor of St. James. Please contact the church office to pre-register (334-2012).


Confirmation Ministry
     Class offered to all baptized youth in grades 7, 8 and 9. As explained under "Christian Education", classes are held during the Sunday School hour (9:30-10:30 a.m.) during the academic year. Retreats and service activities are important parts of this ministry.

First Communion Instruction
     Instruction is offered to families who wish their child to receive the sacrament. St. James welcomes children to the table when they are three years old.
New Member Classes
     Classes are available for all who plan to join St. James. There are five sessions held on Sunday mornings during the Sunday School hour (usually twice a year in the spring and in the fall).

Stephen Ministry
     A program in which members are trained to minister on a one-to-one basis to those in crisis or chronically stressful situations. Classes are offered as interest is indicated.

Monday Evening Bible Study
      This class will begin meeting for the Fall on October 6 at 7:30 p.m., in Room 200 with a study of Paul. The Vatican has declared this the Pauline Year, a time to celebrate the 2,000th anniversary of Paul's death. It seems a natural study as Paul plays such an important role in the Church and especially for Lutherans. These sessions, led by Pastor Emeritus Fritz Foltz, are as follow: October 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3, 10, 17, December 1, 8, 15. You are welcome to join us as your schedule allows.


LSS Bible Study
      This group will meet the first and third Mondays of every month at 3:00 p.m. in Fellowship Room B at the Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Village, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road. What an exciting opportunity to re-connect and remain connected with members of St. James and others in the Lutheran Social Services community.


Wednesday Noon Bible Study
      Bring your Bible and brown bag lunch to Room 303 (top floor) for a one-hour gathering led by Pastor Jeaneete Leisk.


Thursday Morning Bible Study
      This group meets in the Gathering Area from 9:30-10:00 a.m. for a time of fellowship. Bible Study meets from 10:00-11:00 a.m. in Room 200. Child care is available in the Rainbow Room (nursery). A collection is taken each week to pay the child care provider. All are welcome to attend. Please contact the church office if you have any questions.


Sunday School Classes
     Classes are offered for all ages. Classes for children are grouped by grade level. Classroom Assignments



Good Samaritan Class Bible Study Class
      This class uses regularly published materials, such as the Augsburg Series, with frequent visits from guest teachers. Coordinated by Gareth & Shirley Biser. All lessons are taught from the Augsburg Adult Bible Studies Quarterly. This class meets in Room 303 (top floor). Evelyn Smith, contact person.



Adult Discussion Class
      Classes begin with fellowship after which a range of topics and guest speakers are coordinated by Judith Leslie. This class meets in Room 200 (Main floor) from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

Sept. 7 - " Revisiting Religion in the Comics" - led by Carey Moore
Sept. 14 - "Taking a Stand on Iraq - Group Discussion" - led by Dave Crowner
Sept. 21 - "Taking a Stand on Iraq - Forum" - led by Dave Crowner (Meeting in the Nave)



Parents' Class
      Class is comprised of older singles and parents and their children under the age of two, who begin with fellowship after which timely and relevant topics having a "current events" focus are led by Gary Shaffer and meets in Room 309 (top floor). (President, Jack Bucher)



Sunday Morning Bible Study & Prayer Group
      The group is comprised of people of all ages who discuss the lectionary readings each week. G. Ronald Couchman leads the class and is the contact person. They meet in Room 301.


Women's Theological Discussion Group
      This is a discussion group whose study centers around theological and spiritual concerns using writings with women's perspectives. A team of three class members choose and lead the class on a quarterly-basis . Rebecca Brown is the contact person. The group meets in Room 300 (top floor).



Seekers' Class
      A group journeying together as friends on a deeper walk of faith. We explore discipleship through Bible study, through inspirational books, through spiritual practices, and discussion. Contact person is Joel Waybright; Room 204 (main floor).


Faith 101: No Experience Necssary
      This is a class for those new to Bible study or who just want to join an informal Bible study. Everybody's welcome! Join us for one week, a month, or the summer!
